A2A Payments: Trends and Key Success Factors

The rise of account-to-account (A2A) transactions in recent years is changing the paradigm of the payments sector. Their simplicity, universality, cost efficiency, immediate receipt of funds, and regulation are key factors in their success.

The A2A payment ecosystem includes different technologies, from payment initiation to P2P schemes and instant transfers. Within this framework, we find solutions with a long-standing presence in the market and other new entrants that are experiencing high growth.

The success of these solutions lies in the combination of a well-thought-out strategic vision, a progressive development plan and efficient execution, as we can see in these two paradigmatic examples:

        • Bizum, a European success story, has achieved a critical mass of users thanks to its P2P payment solution and the collaboration of the main national banks. After establishing itself as a market standard and expanding its use cases to e-commerce and digital identity, Bizum reached an agreement with its counterparts in Portugal and Italy to ensure interoperability between the three solutions, benefiting more than 43 million joint users.
        • Pix is the global benchmark in A2A payments. Following its creation in 2020 under the umbrella of the Central Bank of Brazil, it has reached more than 153 million users in its market and is expected to account for more than 70% of e-commerce volume by 2027. In addition to the plan for new product and security features, the Brazilian entity has reached various agreements with other payment service providers to bring its solution to other countries in Latin America (Argentina, Chile and Uruguay) and Europe (Portugal, Spain and the Netherlands).

A2A solutions face the challenge of cross-border payments and the need for interoperability between different solutions in order to compete with cards in their main competitive advantage. Wero, for example, seeks to position itself as a regional A2A payment solution, backed by EPI, an initiative supported by the European Commission and the ECB.
